Wood Processing

Traditionally, efficient kiln operation is dependent on the experience of a skilled operator. Based on previous operations, the operator must make a educated guess as to when to shut off the kiln. Often, the drying times become fixed based on the material to be dried, resulting in fluctuations in the rejection rate. Operator turnover, or changing lumber and environmental conditions can dramatically increase the rejection rate.

Existing computerized kiln control systems, prior to SmartTrac MMS, utilize various means to attempt to measure the moisture content of the drying lumber, yet are still dependent on operator judgment to determine the optimal drying point. These systems do not utilize an algorithmic model to aggregate multiple measurement points for determining the precise shutdown time for minimal degrade.

SmartTrac MMS utilizes a predictive model to analyze the moisture content from each sensor within the kiln, searching for the optimal combination of overall readings that will result in the highest yield.

Multiple sensors, in the form of 2' x 3' metal plates, are placed on top of the wood throughout the kiln. Each sensor is attached with a standard clip and cabling leading back to the controller.

The SmartTrac MMS control system monitors the changing humidity readings from each sensor, utilizing its proprietary algorithm to determine the optimal drying point. At that time, the control system automatically shuts down the kiln.

The SmartTrac MMS control system does not replace the existing control system - it augments its operation. Should the SmartTrac MMS system go down, the existing control system will take over. Existing control systems that vary temperature, air humidity or fans continue to operate during the drying process.

By optimizing the kiln drying cycle, SmartTrac MMS delivers the following benefits:
  • Reduced degrade
  • Reduced energy costs
  • Reduced CO2 emissions
  • Increased kiln efficiency
  • Improved product quality
